Young and Powerful: Billie Eilish

In less than 24 hours, Billie Eilish has garnered over four million views for her most recent music video “when the party’s over”, exemplifying just how strong of a following the young 16-year-old singer has built. That’s right, you read that correctly: 16 years old. Don’t let her young age fool you. Simply put, she is an unstoppable powerhouse whose artistry oozes a maturity beyond her years.

What sets Eilish apart is the palpable confidence she presents as an artist, performer, and overall human being. Growing up in a family of actors and musicians, she has always been surrounded and encouraged by creative energy. When you watch her perform, whether in person or online, you begin to understand that her music is not a stage persona but a genuine extension of herself and her inner thoughts. The lyricism and musicality in her songs mirror the complexity of her emotions, ranging from the vulnerable simplicity of “idontwannabeyouanymore”, which illuminates Eilish’s own insecurities and self-deprecation, to the hard-hitting badassery of “you should see me in a crown”. When you listen to her music, the delicate softness of her voice sounds as if your ears have been graced by an angel while her words possess the dual magic of comforting you in your anxieties and empowering you to become the boss-ass-bitch you were born to be.

Without even releasing her debut album, Eilish has already had quite a successful career. It’s only been two years since she released her debut single “Ocean Eyes” on Soundcloud, but, in that short time, she has become a global phenomenon. After releasing her nine-track EP, “don’t smile at me”, Eilish, along with her older brother Finneas O’Connell (who co-writes and co-produces her music), embarked on her own “Where’s My Mind Tour” in addition to heavy appearances on the festival circuit, including Lollapalooza in Chicago and Outside Lands in San Francisco. She’s also had a chart-topping collaboration with Khalid and opened for Florence + The Machine in the US and Australia.

Fresh off the release of her new single “when the party’s over”, Billie Eilish has returned to the stage on her sold-out “1 By 1 Tour”. While she may be young and her professional career is even younger, there is no denying that she has the “it” factor. It’s unexplainable, but the moment you hear her music or watch her perform, you understand how she has amassed such a loyal and dedicated fan base. I would say she’s a legend in the making, but I think she’s already reached legendary status in her own right.

Keep an eye out for Billie Eilish’s debut album, expected to drop later this year.
